Purse Cleaning Guide: Product Care & Maintenance

Understanding the basics of cleaning and storage ensures that your fashion handbag maintains its elevated look and feel for many years to come. Fortunately, learning how to clean a purse is a breeze and usually only requires basic household products.

Proper care depends on the bag’s material. We use the finest genuine suede leather, vegan leather, and nylon, as well as metal hardware. Here’s how to clean them all.

Genuine Suede Leather

Suede purse cleaning differs from leather because suede is more sensitive to liquids. Learning how to clean a purse made from suede is fairly straightforward—use dry tools whenever possible.

Remove light dirt and debris with a terry cloth towel, a suede brush, or even an old toothbrush. For light stains, use a suede brush or pencil eraser to gently work the stain out. For deeper stains, it’s best to use a suede shampoo and follow the product’s instructions. Rubbing alcohol or white vinegar can also be used for stubborn stains.

Besides cleaning, treat a suede purse just like a leather purse—avoid excessive moisture, light, and heat, as well as cosmetics, perfumes, and oils, and store it in a cool, dry, and dark place when not in use.

Vegan Leather

Most vegan leather purse cleaning can be performed with a damp cloth and mild solution of water and dish soap or baby soap. Use a second damp cloth to remove soapy residue, and then dry the purse with a clean, dry cloth or towel. Before use, always wring out your damp cloths so they’re barely damp—not wet.

Avoid exposing your purse to excessive amounts of moisture, light, and heat. Keep your purse away from cosmetics, perfumes, and oils. We recommend storing your purse in a cool, dry, and dark place when not in use.

Nylon

Nylon purses can usually be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap. Rubbing alcohol or white vinegar may remove stubborn stains.

Metal hardware can be cleaned by buffing it with a dry microfiber cloth or wiping with a damp cloth and mild soap. To remove stubborn tarnish, use a polishing pen or liquid polishing solution.
